I think it will become apparent that learning cannot be turned off, that given a rich environment, learning becomes like the air—it’s in and around us.

The philosophy wall is a large part of our learning environment. For more in our series on building our learning space, please click here.

When I first joined Armada back in July of 2014, I was immediately inspired by what we call the Philosophy Wall. Brendan and Cassie designed this wall to display the 12 values that define Armada’s philosophy and culture right at the entrance to the Base.

It’s an interactive and thought-provoking part of our learning environment that gives our space a little bit of a temple vibe. Through the past year, the philosophy wall has gone through many iterations Every few weeks, we’ll add more content to the wall that’s inspired by these values – quotes, art projects, posters, photographs – and share what they mean to us!

Here are the 12 values:

  1. Comprehensiveness
  2. Goal-Orientation
  3. Improving through Mistakes
  4. Self-Possession
  5. Leadership
  6. Well-Being
  7. Creativity
  8. Open Communication
  9. Spirit of Giving
  10. Lifelong Learning
  11. Simplicity
  12. Self-Discipline

Our philosophy wall routine is one of the reasons I love being a part of the Armada Team. It’s a rare pleasure in our modern life to have opportunities to think so deeply about our personal and team values with kids and adults of all ages. I’ve always loved the richness and depth of the “examined life.”

Armada allows me to guide my life with principles along with other people who are deeply committed to living an examined life.

How often do you get to chat about the art of simplicity with nine-year-olds?

It’s honestly super cool and something I look forward to every other week. Just like us as learners, the philosophy wall is in a state of constant revision and growth. In our newsletter, we talk a lot about the beauty, challenges, and triumphs of trying to live our philosophies through our living, working, and learning environments.

If you want to be a part of our journey, please join the newsletter.
